Why Buy Eco-Friendly Products?

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

- Chinese Proverb

While the proverb has many different interpretations, it has never been more true in its literal sense, as it is today.

Why should we worry about Climate Change—our last chance to safeguard our future.

Earth's climate is at a cusp of some massive changes today and our actions will determine if that change is positive or destructive. The decisions we take today, as individuals, will have huge effect on our future, our kids' future and humanity on the whole.

Fact:

The global temperature is predicted to increase to 1.5 degrees in the next two decades.

Why that is worrisome?

Higher temperature is directly related to more pollution, higher spread of infectious disease, deaths related to hyperthermia, species extinction & much more.

Fact:

"Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans." (source: https://www.sas.org.uk/our-work/plastic-pollution/plastic-pollution-facts-figures/).

More than 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute.

An average human uses 3-4 brushes per year, leading to huge amount of plastic waste being added to the landfills and the ocean.

Why that is worrisome?

This plastic has made its way in our diet, the air we breathe and according to research even in our blood. This is in addition to the millions of animals that die every year due to plastics.

How can Eco-friendly consumption make a difference?

  • Reduce plastic usage, save natural resources.

Buying products made from natural, bio-degradable material instead of plastic can help considerably reduce plastic usage & therefore, production.

  • Put pressure on companies

I have often heard many people say that as an individual, they can't make much of a difference and only if corporates make changes, the real change will happen. While there is some truth in that, people often forget that WE are the consumers of products manufactured by them. So if we change our habits and buying patterns, corporates will be forced to change their way of functioning. Most corporates are motivated by profit, the only way to force them to make changes is to threaten that profit.

  • Save money

Yes, you read it right. On the surface, this might seem contradictory as eco-friendly & sustainable products are more expensive than mass produced plastic-based products. But, sustainable products last longer & are often reusable, saving you hell loads of money in the long run.

  • Live healthy

One of the primary reasons why all of this is important is because it's directly related to our health & well-being. Plastic pollution, air pollution, water pollution, increasing temperatures, species extinction all affect us—humans. No matter how much we destroy the nature, it is regenerative and will come back, but if human beings will survive this or not is the bigger question.

Going Eco-friendly: We still have time to act

I am aware that this article seems like a doomsday prediction, even though that wasn't my intention, I also did not want to downplay the urgency of the situation. But, the good news is that we still have the time & opportunity to act today & change the course of the future—towards a more positive outcome. For us and for our future generations. Simple steps like changing your plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush or changing to reusable products can make a huge difference.

One such action has the power to trigger the flywheel of change.
